About Ridge & Verge — Bedfordshire Roofing Guide

What this site is

Ridge & Verge is a small editorial project about roofing in Luton and the towns around it. We explain how roofs are put together, how they go wrong, and what the usual repairs and replacements actually involve.

We don't work on roofs ourselves. We write about them so the subject makes sense to the people who own them.

What we cover

The guides stay close to the sort of roofs you find locally, and to the questions people tend to have about them.

  • Re-roofing across Dunstable and Houghton Regis, and what older local homes often need
  • Period and heritage roofs around Leighton Buzzard and Linslade
  • Pitched roofs — tiles, slate and the layers underneath
  • Flat roofing systems compared: EPDM, fibreglass and felt
  • How leaks are traced and put right
  • Gutters, fascias and the rest of the roofline

How we write it

Answer first, then the reasoning. We try to be concrete about materials, methods and the trade-offs involved, and we'd rather explain one thing properly than list ten in passing.

Where roofs differ by age or location, we say so. A slate roof in Harpenden and a felt flat roof on a Luton extension are different animals, and pretending otherwise helps no one.
